Unter einem sozio-technischen System versteht man Menschen und mit diesen verknüpfte Technologien, welche so strukturiert sind, dass sie zusammen ein gewünschtes Ergebnis produzieren. Ein sozio-technisches System ist ein Spezialfall eines komplexen adaptiven Systems.
Komplexe adaptive Systeme sind komplex, weil sie aus mehreren zusammenhängenden Elementen bestehen. Sie sind adaptiv, weil sie ein besonderes Anpassungsvermögen an ihre Umwelt zeigen und die Möglichkeit haben, (aus Erfahrung) zu lernen.

Die technischen Aspekte in der Softwareentwicklung lassen sich nicht von den menschlichen Aspekten und zwischenmenschlichen Interaktionen trennen.
Sie beeinflussen sich gegenseitig.

They influence each other.
